The PGA Player of the Year Award began in 1948,

By 1990 it was decided that two Awards should be
given. The original award by the PGA of America, and the new one by the PGA Tour.
The PGA of America award has been based on a points system since
1982, with points awarded for accomplishments throughout the year.
