Traveling by Road
top
Mexico has fairly good highways and adequate roads with an
increasing number of freeways being built each year. There
are both free roads ( Libre ) and toll roads (Cuota or Auto Pistas).
The Cuota/Auto Pistas can be a bit pricey if traveling long
distances, yet they are normally in very good condition with little
to no traffic in certain areas and are normally patrolled by state
police. It is also important to know there are numerous plant,
vegetation and fruit inspection stations along both the Libres and
Cuotas to ensure that these items are not transported over certain
boundary lines within the interior of Mexico.
In certain areas there is a volunteer group known as "The Green
Angels" who often travel the highways assisting anyone in need,
whether you have run out of gas, have a flat tire or other
mechanical problems. Despite their generous service, they cannot be
expected to be fully equipped for every situation, so it is best to
be sure your vehicle is properly prepared for long distance travel.
The gas stations "Pemex" are federally owned and operated with
normally very clean rest facilities and small convenience stores.
They usually take credit cards as well as American dollars and
pesos; but be sure to ask if they will allow you to pay by credit
card before gassing up.
